Level 2

Ages 18 and over

To be eligible to take part in this course you must have completed our Level 1 introductory course or have equivalent experience.

Our Level 2 program this year is going to be bigger and better than ever - with a revamped syllabus and guest teachers. Our aim is to create a program which both satisfies experienced performers and gives newer performers the basic grounding that they need.

This course builds on the work covered in our Level 1 courses, and aims to give students a more nuanced and theatrical understanding of impro - while still having fun. It is particularly beneficial for those students interested in the performance side of improvised theatre.

The exact nature of the syllabus will change between sets of workshops, based upon the inspiration and the goals of the teachers. The courses this year will cover:

Term 1: Storytelling and Character

Taught by Greg Rowbothom and Tom Dunston

  • Dates: May 5th - 23rd June, 2012
  • Time: Saturdays 1-4pm
  • Where: Ithaca Hall (cnr Ennogera and Kennedy Tce, Red Hill)
  • Cost: $120 ($100 students) for the entire eight week course

This course aims to introduce students to two key impro skills - telling stories and improvised singing. The class will look at different techniques for developing stories on stage, drawing significantly on the work of Keith Johnstone. The emphasis is on keeping it simple, connecting with your partner, having fun exploring your world and making bold choices to move the scene forward. It is about playfully discovering the story, not about laboriously planning it. There will also be a basic introduction to character work. The class will finish with two classes devoted to musical improv - one of which will be taught by our amazing guest teacher Tim Redmond of ImproMelbourne.

  • Platforms and tilting
  • Advancing and Extending
  • Emotion and Reaction

This class is focused on expanding the physical skills of students. The first part of the course will be taken by a guest physical theatre teacher, who will teach students valuable physical theatre techniques tailored to improvisers.
